What can GIS do for you?

Updated: Oct 8, 2018

Recently at the MN GIS/LIS Consortium Annual Conference I was talking with a few colleagues about how amazing and useful GIS (geographic information systems) is across so many industries. One frustration we shared is that more people don't know about the power of GIS. This was the impetus for creating this blog.

There is a benefit for virtually every industry to use GIS. Whether you are trying to track your assets and categorize/organize specific characteristics of them or if you are a new company trying evaluate your market and demographics, GIS can do it for you. If you develop real estate or want to follow the movements of sharks throughout the Atlantic, GIS can do it for you. If you want to analyze the effect of climate change on monarch butterflies GIS can do it.

The possibilities are endless. If you haven't heard of it yet, get ready. The promise of GIS is so powerful and prolific that the technology will soon be as commonplace as the iPhone has become since its genesis. Instead of "There's an app for that!", businesses and agencies around the world will be saying "GIS can do that for you."

This blog is an attempt to help that process get started. Let's get the conversation started on what GIS can do in your industry.

I look forward to making the power of GIS widely known and helping businesses use its capabilities to help them stand out in a competitive arena.
